KANSAS CITY, Mo. – If this Sunday’s game between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Denver Broncos looks similar to the last one played between the teams, don’t blame them. Blame the NFL’s schedule-makers.

They’re the ones who have the AFC West rivals playing both of their annual games this season within just two weeks.

“The general philosophy isn’t going to change,’’ Chiefs coach Andy Reid said. “Their schemes aren’t going to change. There will be tweaks within the scheme. We’ll do the same thing. We’ll have subtle little changes. I don’t think you’ll see drastic changes.”

It’s not unheard of for teams to play both of their games against one another in such a small window. In 2009, Reid’s Philadelphia Eagles played the Dallas Cowboys in the final game of the regular season, and then the teams met again the next week in the first round of the playoffs. Dallas won both games.

That type of arrangement is unusual. Usually some time lapses in between games. More typical is the two months between games this season for the Chiefs and Oakland Raiders. The teams played at Arrowhead Stadium in the middle of October, and will meet again in Oakland on Dec. 15. The Raiders have a different starting quarterback now (rookie Matt McGloin) than they did then (Terrelle Pryor).

But this time, the Chiefs and Broncos haven’t had much time to evolve.

“Sometimes teams are very different, with injuries and stuff,’’ Chiefs quarterback Alex Smith said. “They change a lot of over a few weeks. Here, it’s not that much different. There’s a lot of carryover from two weeks ago. Not much has changed personnel-wise, even scheme-wise. There’s not much difference.’’
